Now that we have started reading the book, how have your original predictions changed? What do you think of the characters so far? Can you make any connections – text to text, text to self or text to world? Ask your parents about The Munsters, Gone With the Wind, the Cold War or some of the other events and people mentioned in the book. Check the internet to get some background knowledge about the 60’s.
My predictions were sooooooo different from what actually happened. :p
I was actually really surprised at how different it was from what I thought…..
I would tell you guys what happened in my story, but that would ruin it! So read it and find out
text-self = I can relate to how he (I forget his name :S) wanted a dog so bad! I have asked for one my whole enitre life!
Hailey’s Christmas List…
1. A yellow lab!
And Madame….. the time is all messed up again :S It is an hour ahead…
I think I fixed it. It was because of the time change. Unfortunately, it doesn’t update automatically.
My predictions are really different. I never thought that the dad would be a septic tank cleaner. Also I was surprised about his dad building the shelter in their lawn. Text to self- when I was younger, I always wanted a dog but then my brother was born and we didn’t think he was ready for a dog yet. Then my sister was born and we didn’t think se could handle a dog either, so we still don’t have a dog.Text to world- there are always wars going on overseas. They are all extremely pointless in my opinion.
My predictions are very different now, I didn’t think this book would be anything that it is starting to unravel to be.
For example, I thought that he left because of family issues…but right now his family seems fairly happy…so I can’t see why he would want to leave.
Text-To-Self: When I was younger I begged for a dog…and now I’m getting one…because when my mom gets married I “inherit a step-dog.” But when I was younger my mom got me a cat instead.
Text-To-World: Well I’m starting to think this book is about wars because you said our next book would be on wars and this is the right timeline for a war to be happening…and wars are happening all over the world and they affect many people in different ways.
Text-To-Text: This reminds me of my grandpa reading me a world war two book because he loves to talk about the old days…or as grandpa always said “when I was a little girl…”
Actually, I decided to do the Holocaust book after this one. Sorry if I misled you.
I think everyone will really like this book. It has some of the same features as Peak. The way it began mysteriously and how the plot unravels differently than what you might imagine. I think that both boys and girls can relate to the story and it even has a bit of a mystery towards the end.
Listen carefully as I read, because the author uses a lot of foreshadowing. (Definition: Foreshadowing is the presentation in a work of literature of hints and clues that tip the reader off as to what is to come later in the work.)
The only thing I’m worried about is that I cried the first time I read it. I hope I will be able to read it without crying. Oh well, maybe we’ll all have a good blubber.
That sounds like fun!!!
My predictions were so off from the real story line. The only thing that I want to know is how does that part come into the book right now???
I like the characters right now because it reminds me of guys in our class.
text-to-self= When I was really little I wanted a dog too, but my parents always said no, not right now. Three years ago we got another dog and I was so happy that we did.
text-to-world= I know that people everywhere they want a pet too but can’t get one for a reason!!!
Yeah, my predictions were a little out there, now that I think about it. How is Danny going to get to the police office? It almost seems like two differentstories.
I can see how Madame made a connection to Peak. I think the writting styles are very similar. They are talking about normal things but the author puts a funny twist on it. I thought this book was going to be some what serious, but so far it’s turned out to be kind of funny.
I made a text-to-self connection when we read about Danny and his brothers(is his name Bo?I forget) relashionship. How they were very close when they were younger, but now they are slowly branching away from each other. It was the same with my brother and I. We were close when we were young, but as we grew older we stopped talking and now we don’t talk at all
I had no idea that the story would go back and forth like that! (I quite like that technique!) I think it is cool how you don’t really know who is in the jail. At least, I don’t remember reading that. Other than when the sherriff thought his name was Beau. This made my predictions very out of line!! I thought that the story was all going to be based on him at the sherriff’s office and not at the Hollow.

) mentioned that she thought this story was going to be much more serious than it actually is!

I agree with cassi22 when she (or he?
Text-to-Self: I have always loved dogs and I do have a dog! I can connect to Danny because I know how much he would want a companion like a dog because well….. DOGS ARE AMAZING!!
Text-to-World: A war is going on in the book at this time. Wars have been going on all around the world and I can see why Danny’s Dad is making that trench. War affects more countries than just the ones that have started it.
Text-to-Text: A while ago, I read a bit of a book about a rocket launch that had not gone well. I know why Beau’s mother would be worried, not all launch’s go as well as planned and obviously the one in this book that I had read a bit of, it went horribly wrong. The name of the book is: Sixteen Minutes From Home.
P.S. This book is GREAT!!
My original prediction was that the blond hair boy was heading to Cape Canaveral which is a place mentioned in the book. However, I had created a different family set-up for the boy who I named Joe.
Now that we have gotten to the part where Danny has taken the dog to the vet, some predictions have been made. The boy in Chapter 1 is Danny and he decides to keep the dog who goes with him on his journey to Cape Canaveral. Maybe Danny decides to go to the Cape on behalf of his brother Beau who never had the chance.
I always thought it was Beau who was in jail with the dog and he was going to bring it back to Danny, but then he died. So I got all confused.
