Our pet guinea pig had to go to the doctor today. Believe it or not, she has a cold and is running a temperature of 103ยบ. She had to have 3 shots and we have to feed her special food and medicine using a syringe. Hopefully, she will be better by Monday.
I know many of you have pets. It’s easy to get attached to a pet and difficult when they get ill or pass away. What have been your experiences caring for pets? Does anyone have any funny stories about things your pets may have done?
I thought it might be fun to share our pet stories here. Feel free to post a comment.
Our guinea pig is usually a pamphagous eater but now that she is sick, she hasn’t been eating as much as usual.
Pamphagous is a word I adopted through the Save the Words website. Check out the post below and adopt a word today. I challenge you to use it in a blog or journal entry or in class one day.
My dog Paddy, is the funniest dog on earth! He does some pretty wierd things like running around the table, jumping on a backpack to get his food….to running around trying to chase birds in the air or playing with a thistle in his mouth and getting mad at it and barking at it because it would prick him. A lot of things happen to my dog and more things will come as well.
Awww, that’s really sad Madame. Well, I have 1 dog named Hooch, 3 horses named Flicka, Charlie and Comet and I have a rabbit named Billey. I have a funny story to tell you about my dad’s horse, Comet. Comet is a really big black horse and he’s really young – still only 10 or 11 – but sometimes we bring out bottles of sprite and he loves them. We gave one to him one time and he got it in his mouth then tilted his head back and started drinking the rest of the bottle. It was really funny the first time we saw it and we couldn’t belive it at first.
Well, my pets are not very exciting. I just have fish. For me, when one of our fish passes away it is not overly sad for me because we have 14. I only get kind of sad when it is one of my Beta fish because you get attached to them and name them and I do not name our other fish.
I have an evil cat named Cookie that tried to rip my eye out when I was four. I still remember that. My dads ex-girlfriend also has a dog, but its also a bit like my dog. Recently, we discovered it has a stomach tumor, so it may die, but it is getting it removed on Thursday. His name is Ben. My bird, Star, really likes to talk and calls itself a Gooseberry. It also really likes popcorn and will do anything it takes to get a piece, including stealing it right out of your hand mid-flight and eating it on your head. Star is a purple-blue coloured budgie.
Haha, sounds like cute pets everyone!!
I have many pets to take care of! I have a turtle named Pebbles, a fish named … actually he doesn’t have a name, a dog named Gus, a cat named Charlie, and I ride a horse named Majesty!!
Charlie is never nice to Gus, and one day he really surprised my family. It was a long weekend and most of my family was in the living room, when all of a sudden Gus started SCREAMING!! If you have ever heard an Italian Greyhound scream, you will know that it is the worst sound. Gus came and jumped on me for protection when I realized there were chunks of skin ripped out from random spots on his body!!!!!!!!! AHHH! I almost fell over, but instead I screamed and told my Dad. We almost instantly got in the car and took Gussy to an emergency room for animals all the way over by Costco. It turned out Gus had to get stiches and a tube on his side to drain liquid. He would also have to take pain killers. For a few days Gus had a huge cone strapped to his head. Although, Gus is his same old self again.
Charlie on the other hand, needed to be declawed ASAP or we would hane had to give him away. We did find out that Charlie was getting angry at a cat that was outside of our house, and Charlie took it out on Gus. The vet called it “Mis directed aggression.” Charlie is now declawed and doing well.
The things we do for our pets…
A funny time was when I had my first lesson on Majesty and just before I rode I gave him an apple. All of a sudden Majesty started choking and coughing up apple all over my sister Marci who happened to be infront of him!!
It was so funny! Later, we found out that Majesty had surgery on his throat when he was younger!
Good times..
Sad news everyone…Olga da Polga passed away this afternoon. She (really he…it’s a long story) curled up in the corner of her cage and went to sleep. She passed away peacefully.
It’s always sad when a pet passes away but we have great memories of Olga. She was quite a character and very loveable. She used to follow her mom (Georgie) around the couch every night after dinner doing her laps. She could distinguish between cucumber and zucchini, throwing the latter on top of her cage in disgust when given to her. In the summer, she loved to play outside in the grass and eat clover.
We are having a little funeral after dinner and burying her in the backyard. (Reminds me of Gemini Summer and Billy Bear.)
We will miss her very much.
WHEN I SLIPPED IN DOG POO!!
I do not have a dog (even though I really really want one) but alot of my neighbors do, infact one summer day brings back sad sad memories that other people find funny. I was playing squeeze-play with some friends on my street. Of corse we decided to run bare foot because running and flip-flops don’t mix well. So everything was good until suddenly I was sliding into a base when some how dog deriha showed up right where I was sliding!! It just so happened my friends dog was sick that day. Five minutes later I am being laughed at while I get hosed down and smell awfull. Funny you think, for me…not so much! Anyways, that is my experience with dog poo…just wait till you have your, it is NOT FUN!!
Now for my pets, a few years ago, I had a betta fish that was purple and I named her Violet. Then at school, as a secret santa gift fom Hayley, I got another betta fish that was reddish. This worked out well because by then Violet was dead. So, I named the red one Ruldoph. However, when I have fish they don’t usually last long, and you can probably guess that Ruldoph is no longer with us.
That explains why I don’t even have a pet as tiny as a fish now. Maybe…I should try sea monkeys?! Hhmmm…
I have a dog, as well, named Teddy. He is a bit odd, sometimes. He likes to stand on his hind legs and wave at you with both paws, which is really cute, but afterwards he insists on having a treat. He also used to be scared of cats. Whenever cats used to come into our backyard he would run away from them. Ha ha. Also, my Dad’s neighbour has a dog, too. It is a Australian Shepherd, I think and him and Teddy like to run up and down the backyard together only they are seperated by a fence. My dog and the neighbour’s dog, (Foster) have been doing it for about three years now, and there is a little trench now on the left side of the backyard against the fence from him running up and down. it is really funny to watch.
I miss him a lot sometimes because he was such a nice dog!
My Grandpa used to have a dog, too, but because he travelled a lot, his dog ran away to the neighbours and he lives with them now. When I was younger, I remember I went to one of my family reunions and I was playing with my Grandpa’s dog. I can’t really remember his name but I think it was Max…Anyways, I was playing with him and we stopped to catch our breath for a minute when SUDDENLY.. he lifts up his leg and starts peeing all over my leg! It was so disgusting I ran inside and washed it all off! I mean, he was basically treating me like a fire hydrant! Ha ha. I have had a lot of experiences with pets. Some good, some bad.
I also used to have a big black lab named Salem, but he got loose one day and got hit by a car.
Well, thats it!
Aww, I’m really sorry about Olga da Polga, from your display picture, she looks like quite the guinea pig.
Well, I’ve had actually a lot of experience with pets dying on me, ’cause I’ve had so many fish. I don’t even know the death count, but it’s definitely more then twenty.
I’ve also had two short haired hamsters, a white one (Showball) and a sort of cream coloured one (Cookie). Snowball could jump off of basically anything without getting hurt, off of the piano bench, a desk, the kitchen table. She lived an average life of 3 years.
My other hamster, Cookie had a strange nickname, she was dubbed “Squeeze ‘n’ Pee” by my sister, for obvious reasons. Once, Lyd came over for my birthday party, and picked up Cookie to play with… and you know what happened next. Cookie lived for about 2 and a half years, and died while I was at a skating competition in Barrie.
Aww…i’m really sorry to hear about Olga! My hamster Pico isnt doing so well either. He does run around any more and he has something growing on the his stomache
But I also have 2 dogs named Sammy and Kipper. They are the funniest and worst behaved dogs you will ever meet! I could just spend the day watching these two dogs play together. They bite and tackle each other all night. Sometimes they even do this thing where they both stand up on their back legs and then put their front paws around each other so it looks like they are dancing and hugging at the same time. We call it the poodle tango!
I have a dog, and sometimes when it is raining and then she comes back inside she just goes nuts. She runs around the house atacking you and running into stuff. Then she lies down somewhere and falls asleep randomly.
I have a puppy named Spike. He’s about 2 years old so he’s still pretty young. I got him from Peru when I had to leave Canada for a year for my mother’s health. I remember that my dog loves digging. He learned the habit when he got to Canada. But, now its a real problem, when he smells other dogs he normaly tries to escape from our backyard by digging. I had found all the digging places he likes to “go over the wall” and just recently he found another place but behind our shed. we have 2 concrete blocks to keep away unwanted visitors but Spike uses them as stairs and gets right behind our shed and starts digging so everything will be fine………
Until he finds another spot to get out.
As many of you may know, I have one cat named Cosmo. Life’s pretty crazy with him around because he’s a complete maniac. My neighbour once came over and called him a “poindexter” and from that moment on we started to call him “Dexter” as a nickname. It really suits him because the name reminds me of some evil scientist…and I think if Cosmo was human he would be an evil scientist.
I’ve had him for about 8 years now and I have so many stories I could share with all of you. A few weeks ago I had a bunch of people sleep over and when we went to go to bed, Tori came to me saying “Hillary, I think your cat peed on my sleeping bag.” Turns out he did and we had some pretty good laughs about that.
He has several hiding spots in my house, one of which is inbetween the floorboards of the main floor and the basement. He somehow jumps up inbetween there and he has like 6 collars some how from roaming up inbetween the ceilings! We’ve given up on buying him more collars.
My sympathies toward Olga’s passing. (S)he will be greatly missed! She was an adorable little pig!
Well, I have a cat as well named…CAT! Or Kitty, whichever you prefer. He is about four, almost five years old now, and we got him from the Humane Society when he was about three months old. We don’t really know what kind of cat he is, but we know that he is part Siamese because his paws are black on the bottom.
Now, when he was two (I think!), I used to live in another area of Waterloo, and there was a bit more traffic on our street. Well, I was on a bike ride with my Mom, when Dad phoned her on her cell phone telling her that the cat got hit by a car! So, obviously, I freaked out. I pedaled as fast as I could so I could get home and see Cat. Bottom line is, Cat got hit, he slept in a box for a week, then crawled out. He was fine! We didn’t even take him to the vet! The only thing is that now Cat’s shoulder blades are, what I can only describe as, FUSED together. He doesn’t walk of run like normal cats, he kind of gallops or prances. It is actually on of the most amusing things to watch.
I have also had a couple of encounters with birds and fish. I had two beta fish named Manifest and Destiny, but they died and I got two more who died as well. I agree with Heather, you don’t really connect to fish that well, so it wasn’t a big loss. Now on to the birds! In total, we have had 6 budgies, all who have died. Budgies have two week warrenties and 4 out of our 6 birds have died before the two weeks expired. The first two, died from a chemical called teflon. Both within an hour of each other. The next ONE, was named Seymour and he was very intelligent. You could let him out of the cage, hold out your finger and he would fly to it. He also died. We bought another one, who would twirl around her perch whenever I played “Entry of the Gladiators” on the piano. She crawled into her food bowl and died. All of those birds died within two weeks. We got two more, and the one died after a couple of months (YA!) and the other one a whole year (double YA!). We called him Methuselah (get it!
)
Anyways, those are the many pets I have had or have at the moment. Feel free to come and meet my broken cat, Cat.
What she said.
