“Canada’s largest school board is poised to go boy-crazy, with boys-only classes, “boy-friendly” instruction and an all-boys grade school among ways the new director hopes to help young males do better in school.” This article on the parentcentral.ca website caught my interest. Do you think that boys learn differently than girls? Do boys enjoy different types of reading or book genres? Do they like the same activities as girls? Is this a good idea in your opinion? Why or why not? What do you think might be the benefits or the drawbacks of having boys only schools or classes?
Yes, I believe that there would be some benefits and some detriments. Boys do learn differently than girls. We learn better with hands on material. Most boys don’t read as much as girls do. When we do, we usually read about sports, mysteries and adventure books. I think that there are certain activities that are more for girls than boys. An example is singing songs while skipping rope. However, it could also be a bad idea because there would be more contact during physical education and recess. Lastly, it wouldn’t be as disciplined because girls listen better and longer than boys. If boys get bored, they daydream using the little part of their brain that does nothing. Girls can’t do that because their brains are constantly working. Scientificly proven.
Remember 8thwonderoftheworld that all boys or girls may not be like that. I agree with the fact that usally girls like activities such as singing songs while skipping rope and boys usally boys do more physical things such as hokey, basketball, ect.[but not always].
I believe that boys learn differently than girls, I don’t really know how but I think they do. Even in our class I see that guys explain and see things/lessons differently than girls do. I have seen throughout our class that girls read more romantic, realistic fiction etc. and guys are more into sports and scinence fiction etc. I don’t think guys like the same activities that girls do because guys spend most of their time infront of the tv playing video games and girls would spend their time infront of the tv watching a sit com or something. Having a school for girls adn another for boys could be a positive and negative change. It would be postive because girls and guys wouldn’t get in conflicts with the eachother in class and I think that in different subjects it would be easier for us to learn. For example, boys in our class are the ones that usually disrupt the class so with the girls at a different school we would not be interuppted as much and therefore work better. The guys might get better at not speaking out because they wouldn’t have the girls to impress anymore so maybe they would work harder. The boys school would definitly be very different form a mixed school becasue we would miss out on all the school activities that need boys and girls. I personally don’t like th idea of a plain old guys school.
I think boys like different books becaues they are boys the kind of book they like it gory, action, and some other books to. Boys do not like the sme things as girls well some times boys do.
I agree with your thoughts on books.
I don’t think all boys learn different then all girls. I believe it depends on the person rather than there gender. The the majority boys think different than the majority girls, but not all boys. Everyone learns different, everyone injoys different things but not only because of there gender. Most boys probably like comics, science fiction, graphic novels and action packed books. Some books boys and girls both like, for example the book were reading in class called “Peak.” Usally most boys prefer to play sports like football, basketballl, soccer and hockey. Girls usally prefer sports like dance, but not all girls. A benifit for an all boy school might be that some girls and boys might be able to focus on class work better in separte schools. I heard this ‘all boys school’ thing on the news and I think that a school for boys only should be optional to who ever would like to go to a same gender school. I would rather have schools be like they are today than an all girls school and an alll boys school only.
Personally, I really don’t like the idea of boys only schools. First of all, I think that being in an all boys school would be a little tense, because most boys are pretty competative and if you’re bad at something then you don’t have girls to sometimes look down to anymore. I don’t think that girls mind as much as guys if they’re at the bottom of the pile in sports. Of course, not all girls are like this, but I’m just generally speaking. Also, I do believe that girls do learn differently than guys, but that could work out to be both gender’s advantage. If there was school with only one gender, there would only be one learning style. But if you have more than one style, you can learn from it and combine it with your own style to create a better one. The only benifit that I can see for a one gender school would be what lauren42 said about each gender having the activities that they want to do. Boys can play the traditional hockey, basketball, football etc. And girls con finally do swimming, dancing, badmintonetc.
What did you meen by girls to look down to I meen were better then you in some cases and your better than use in others. I agree with you on the none co-ed gym thing… but for different reasons. I mean like even though i’m not good at sports I still like to get passed to and so yea actually alot of girls do mind if they are at the bottom of the pile.
Sorry septimusheap4453, but what did you mean by “if you’re bad at something then you don’t have girls to sometimes look down to anymore.” it sounds a bit offensive?
because it would be much smoother for us, in some cases. Boys are very competitive, I agree. I think that the focus wouldnt increase to much if they had all same gender, because the atmosphere would become much more competitive.
I find that alot of the girls in our grade are much better at staying focused and on task, in class.
The boys are usually the ones that talk out and distrupt the class. I think having an all boys school would be benificial for the girls
Girls can be a bit catty at times, so in that sense all girls school may get hectic, or have an increased amount of “drama”.
I agree with lauren42 about how it isn’t really the genders learn differently, that it is more the kind of person you are. I definatley don’t think many boys would read romantic books like girls, and we would not read as much sports. But with the genres of science, non-fiction, fiction, historic .. etc. it all depends on your personality. I think we read the books that we can relate more easily to, then ones we can’t relate to at all.
I agree with you in some parts of that the thing about the books the thing about better focus and the thing about the competitiveness. Yes in some cases it would be much smother but in other cases don’t you think some of the guys might not be as disruptive I don’t know maybe if certain people were to leave but others were to stay. I can see both perspectives and am kinda on the fence. You did however make some very good points.
I think it might be offensive to some people. What about the tomboys? What about the girls that are sporty’s and want to be out there playing football with the boys? Or what about the boys who want to do more of the academics. So no I don’t think that would be a good idea. I think if you were to do none co-ed stuff in some subjects like health then that would be okay. Also sometimes in gym we will do girls against girls and boys against boys so I think sometimes that is okay. In the academics I think that we can all get along fine in the same class. I think that if the school board wants to start dividing people up the maybe have there be acedemic and applied in elementry school. But really I think that it’s okay and I think that it should all stay the same!
I agree, it all depends on the person and not the gender. A lot of boys like the same things as girls, and thats how they become friends. A reason they could divide the genders up is if the two genders weren’t getting along, however I don’t believe thats happening.
I think it all depends on the person themself. Some boys are very smart, and listen and enjoy doing well. However, some boys dont like to listen, and dont care whether they do well or not. Girls are the same way. So, I can’t really say if boys learn the same way as girls. It all depends. For the book genres, I think boys and girls have some different tastes. Girls probably like more love story, fantasy, and boys probably like more around the sports, comedy type genre. In my opinion, girls and boys like some different activities, however they do like some of the same ones also. For example, some girls might like to dance and sing, while most boys don’t. However, sports, to me, is considered an activity both girls and boys enjoy. Overall, a boys-all-school could be good and bad. It could be good because boys wont be as distracted by girls as they would in public school because theres none there. However it could also be bad, because there might be more conflict between guys, and boys tend to get in more trouble then girls.. at least in our class. Therefore, there could be more misbehaving, ending up with the teacher going crazy.
I completely agree gialloconiglio3 because everbody does have a diferent personality. One boy could like math and science while the other one just likes to do nothing. so yes it all does depend on the person. But it also depends ion whether they are wanting to learn and try hard whethere they are there just because they have to be. Then again a personality trait could also have developed because of a past experience or other people’s behaviour.
However boys tend to be known to be loud, misbehaving and rude. Also they are known for either being nerds or athletes.
In my opinion I find that boys usually are more physical. That’s doesn’t mean that guirls are always so nice to each other, but what we do usually has something to do with behind the back and emotional things.
Then i also think that girls can be just as athletic, nice, poilte or rude, as nerdy or as cool as a guy can. Our world seems to be made up of sterotypes.
If there were an all boys school, I think iot would depend on the students. Their atttide, their initiative, their willingness to learn and do a goos job. Their me be less distractionws from certain girs as gialloconiglio3 mentioned above. but it could go either way; good or bad. It just all depends
If there were “boy only schools” lots of things would change. I think that there would have to be “mean” or “scary” teachers because boy’s are usually the ones who don’t listen or the people who are reckless but with a teacher that the students are afraid of guys would probably listen better.
I agree with tycheese because boys are usually alot harder to control. Their more rebelious and dont care much about getting in trouble. They figure if they get in trouble so what? As for girls its usually not their mission to get into trouble. They’re mostly quieter and keep to themselves.
I dont like the idea of an all boys school. I would hate an all girls school so i assume that if i were a boy i would hate that. On the other hand it would most likely improve my grades because it would be easier to pay attention to the teacher without any boys to look at. I think it depends on the person as far as learning skills go because I know some very intelligent boys and some very smart girls so I dont think its a gender thing. I also think boys do read different types of books then girls. For example I like to read about romance and relationships, but I think boys are more into football and hockey. But once again it depends on the person because some sproty girls like to read about basketball and sports and some boys like to read about romance so I think it all depends on likes and dislikes not gender. I also think the same for activities. Its not about gender its about what you like and what you dont.
I think it would be a bad idea because then it would be harder to make more friends of the different gender. I think the only good thing would be for the teachers because boys wouldn’t be in a class with there girlfriend, if they had one. There for they might focus on them instead of there work.
I agree with you that it would be harder to make friends of different genders but i disagree in the sense that it would be better for the teachers, I personally think it would be harder for teachers because there would be a lot more boys and as a lot of people are saying they are goofing off, so it would be worse.
We still need a new topic for this week. These two topics have been here for already over a week.
Wow! You guys really keep me on my toes. I’m in Toronto at a computer conference learning lots of new things but I’ll post a topic right now anyways.
See you on Monday.
I’m at home sick
. I do think that boys learn differently than girls because they tend to focus on moving objects more then copying stuff off the board. I think that a boys only school would be good because boys don’t listen as much as girls do.
i disagree with raspberry14. i think boys only schools would be bad for the same reasons septimusheap4453 said. I also think that only some boys listen worse than girls. Mostly i think this would be a bad because if the high schools were not divided it wouldn’t prepare people for the real world and boy/girl interactions
I would hate an all boys school guys get way too competitive so that would suck.
It would tottally suck having just boys because all it would be did you see that call of duty game that just came out. Also I think the teachers will go a little crazy.
Boys only? Well I guess it wouldn’t hurt but it might get women’s rights activists after us so its most likely for the best.
