In today’s reading, Peak received a packet of letters from home, including a special card from Rolf stating “I miss you. I want you home.” Peak wrote in his moleskine, “With those two sentences, he had done more for me than Josh had ever done or could do. When Josh arrived late that afternoon, I didn’t tell him about the Moleskine or the letters. He didn’t deserve to know.” p. 125, Letters
What do you think Peak means by this? How will this affect his relationship with his dad? With Rolf? Can you connect with Peak’s feelings?
I believe that Peak was just getting to like Josh a bit before the letters came in. It was then that he realized that his step-dad cared more about him than his real dad. He also realized that his own letters in the past had gotten to Josh, but he ignored them. I don’t believe that Josh was too busy to write back because he could have done what Rolf did – just a short little note to show that he cared about Peak and was still interested in him. One other way this could go (I really, really hate to think about this) is that Rolf might have just said those words to get Peak to hate Josh and come home. He might think that if Peak’s relationship with Josh improves a lot on Everest then maybe Josh would come back to live with Peak’s family. And then he would have to leave both Peak and his mom, like switching places with Josh. Still, I think that Peak is feeling more warm towards Rolf than Josh right now. And it was also good for him to write back and not ignore the letters like Josh had.
I agree and really hope it doesn’t go the other way. I don’t think it because from what I have heard throughout the readings, I feel that Rolf is a pretty honest guy.
That is a really good point! The part about how Josh could’ve just quickly wrote a letter back to Peak about how he cares about him still, instead of ignoring them all. Josh, in my opinion, has been a bad dad, and doesn’t deserve to know about the letters Peak received from Rolf.
That is a really good point! Rolf could be playing tricks on Peaks mind but because of how strongly worded and true Rolf sounded in the letter I dont think he would do something like that. I think Rolf wouldn’t want to risk putting his relationship with Peaks mom in jeapordy. I hope hes just trying to give him the father hes always wanted. I also hope Josh finds out so he can realize what a horrible father he has been and is being.
I think that Peak might not like his dad as much because he really doesn’t deserve it. To do that to your son is just horrible. He could maybe even just write something like “Hi, Peak, wish you were here” or tell him what mountain he is currently on. It would only take a couple of seconds. I think Peak might come to terms a little bit more with Rolf because even though he had said that he liked Rolf he just didn’t want anyone to replace his dad. Maybe, he will grow to like Rolf a little bit more. I think that Peak means his dad has been out of his life for so long and is only there know because he wants to use him to get famous. I agree with Peak and think Josh really didn’t deserve to know. If my dad ever did anything like that to me, I would be furious.
I agree as well, since Peak has a feeling that Josh (his Dad) has been using him for his company’s reputation. If my Dad was using me to get rich, I would think “Wow, is he the one I want to be with.” I also think that since Josh has barely been in touch with Peak, their father-son relationship will not be as good, and now Rolf is entering his life and is also being really nice to him so I think that Peak will have a difficult time choosing which dad he would want to stay with. If I was in that situation, I would also have a tough time choosing which dad I want to be with.
Well, would you want to tell your dad about what is going on in your life, if he didn’t even bother to do so himself? I believe that Peak didn’t show Josh the letter, because he didn’t want his father to know about his life, his family, scence Josh couldn’t be bothered to lift a finger or his own kid!
I, actually never liked Josh. He is the father I would never want!
Josh never payed attention to peak, let alone even cared about him! The only reason Peak even saw his dad was for his father, not him! I believe that as the story goes on, Peak will just keep seeing sides of Josh, that will disapoint and belittle Peak. Ralf seems like a nice man, to fill in Josh’s place. I think that Peak will later on relize that Ralf actually cares about him, unlike his father.
I can not connect with Peak’s feelings, because my dad has almost always been there for me. He has watched me grow up, take my first test, tie my first shoe lace, cut my hair for the first time, redecorate my room on my own, paint my first picture, and so on. Josh has never been there for Peak, I wouldn’t know how it would feel. I can only imagine that it would feel awful!
I totally agree. I mean if my dad did that to me I wouldn’t tell him that stuff.
Opps *Rolf* sorry! nl27, spelt it Ralf… opps!
When Peak said “he doesnt desreve to know”, I think he meant that Josh hasn’t been the best father, and Rolf has been a way better father then Josh has ever been. And at that moment, Peak realized that Rolf was a really great father, and I guess in a way, ‘his father’. I believe that Peak won’t appreciate Josh as much anymore, and will always be comparing him to Rolf from now on.
I think Peak will probably try to stay away from his Dad and not talk to him. I don’t think it is entirely Peaks fault that Josh isn’t being a very good Father. He has been running his climbing company for a very long time so he doesn’t want to just stop it. He also hasn’t had to take care of a child in a while. I think peak will eventually forgive his Dad but for now he will probably continue to be angry.
I think what Peak means by this is that since Josh never bothered with answering any of his letters he doesnt deserve to hear about the better dad Rolf is being than his actual father. I think Peak basically just wants his father to be more like Rolf. I think this will make his relationship with Josh alot worse because he now sees what a good father looks like and Josh doesnt come close, Peak is probably very disapointed in his father. I think this will make his relationship with Rolf alot stronger because if hes more fatherly, then Peak will most likely warm up to him quicker. Since the letter was specifically directed to Peak from Rolf only, I think Peak will grow to enjoy him more and like to be around him as if he was his real father.
I agree that Peak would want his dad to be more like Rolf. The letter shows that Rolf really cares about Peak.
I have the same perspective as you. also the same idea.
I think Peak and Rolf will get along much better now. I think Rolf was trying to make there friendship change for the better when he sent that letter.
Peak was just starting to get along with Josh on their way up Everest. Now that Peak has gotten the letter from Rolf he may think that Josh could care less for him. Josh is his dad, he should care for his own son.
If I were Peak I would be very angry. I would be so mad that I would want to leave Everst and go back home to my family that loves me. I wouldn’t care for Josh anymore.
I still think that Josh is using Peak for publisity.
I think that Josh has been very unrespectful and Peak now feels that because of the letter from Rolf he has become annoyed that Josh would never do something like that. He thinks that he is used and is confused about himself and the dad who never even answered his letters. Josh could have at least sent one or two letters to Peak telling him about his life and how he loves him. If I was in Peak’s position I would get very angry at Josh and probably refuse to clime until I got an apology or was actually appreciated and not just an extra way for Josh to make money or a publicity stunt!
I can’t connect with Peak’s feelings. But I think what he means is that Josh was a bad father and Rolf is a lot better. I think that this effects his relationship with Rolf because he knows that Rolf cares about him and loves him. Also that josh wasen’t a good a father as Rolf
I think when Peak wrote that he meant that even is step-father cared enough about him to send a letter to him and through Peak’s entire life, all the letters he sent Josh, never got returned. It’s just thta ralf actually showed that he actuallt cared about Peak and at least showed him that he cared enoug to say hi and stay in touch.
)
I think Peak is a bit hurt bercause he just realized that his step-father apparently cared about him more than his dad did because Ralf actually took time out of his day just so that he could write to Peak. Already Peak and Josh’s realtionship isn’t very close so I don’t hink it will get much worse. In fact, I think by the end of the book their relationship will be more like father and son and they will get to know each other and hopefully Josh can make up some of his absense in Peak’s past childhood.
Ummmmmm………I guess I could on some level because I have a step-mom and she seems to care about me. I think that what ralf did my step-mom would do for me and that she actually might miss me a little bit. Although both my parents have remained in my childhood throughout it so far and there are no plans to change that (hopefully
I think Peak by saying that his dad did not deserve to know about the moleskins means that his dad wouldn’t care even if he did tell him just like he didn’t care when Peak sent all those letters before. I think this will change Peak and his dads relationship for the worse because Peak has lost all of his trust for his dad since now all the letters he sent to his dad and he didn’t get one back.
I believe that Josh really did care about Peak but was so busy with his business and such that he didn’t really get down to doing it. I think that is horrible though becasue he didn’t even have time for his own son. The way Peak is feeling towards Josh and how he is kind of ignoring him will definetly make their realationship crumble. I think that Peak and Rolf will really feel connected more once he returns home because those few words really made Peaks day and that will help their realationship grow. I think that Peak was really crushed by how Rolf just got king place in his life over his real dad. He meant that those words just made him sure that Rolf loved him but Josh never once sent him a letter so it made him feel like Josh never really cared about him. I can connect with Peak because because my sisters are so close in age they sometimes talk abou things i don’t know about and I feel left out. Just like Peak.
