  1. It’s amazing how much you need water in order to survive! I never thought of how you need water not only to drink, but how you also need it for food. We really take it for granted with all the food that we don’t need, like how it takes about 24,000 L. (I think) to get a hamburger! I had no idea that we wasted it so much! :(

  2. Is there anything that can be done to raise awareness or help with this problem? What small actions can you, as students, take to make a change.

  3. It is very unfortunate that more people are not aware of the this water issue! We take our water resources for granted! Water even goes into our clothing! Some people don’t even have clothing let alone water! We use up a lot of water that we probably don’t need. I think its sad that our governments aren’t taking action on this. People are getting very ill because of it. I think something we can do is make people more aware. In the video clip it said that our online advertising is geared towards fashion or sports when really we need awareness raised on our environment . I think that if people were more up on it they my be ready to help the situation instead of not seeing the issues.

  4. 38 000 children under the age of 5 die per week from unsafe water! It says that women and children spend over 40 billion hours a year walking for water and we just have to turn on a tap! BUT! If a village gets a well then they will have clean, safe water and can use the extra time to grow a vegtable garden to feed the family. I have learned from reading this blog, that people waste WAY to much water and should be more considerate with the way we use water! If you want to help you can fundraise and donate.

  5. At school, we are working with Free the Children to provide clean water for children in developing countries. However, we can also make a better effort to reduce water usage in our own homes. Later this term, Free the Children will be presenting a one hour assembly on the topic of water. It will tie in well with this topic.

I also agree with glitter7. Online advertising and media needs to change its focus to make more people aware of this cause. Otherwise, we could face a water shortage in the future.

  6. I can’t believe tat people have cell phones but don’t have access to clean water…It seems a little strange to me but if this is true we REALLY need to do something about this :| I think someone should create a charity for this issue and raise awareness so that everyone knows what is going on about this issue

  7. I think that this article should show us alternative ways to make these items without using all the water or else we will almost certainly face a water shortage in first world countries and third world countries will have major problems as they already have water shortage.

  8. Also are they saying we shouldn’t wear clothes…

  9. There is alot people that die because thy don’t have clean water. In hatiai or other countries we should send fresh water so they can be healthy. Also, they should have a water storage so they can be well and not die or get really sick.

  10. I think that they aren’t saying that you shouldn’t wear clothes, but instead be less waste full. For example you shouldn’t get piles of clothing just to get the newest fashion, but instead should buy the clothes that are needed. Anyway, I really admire the politicians that have helped to stop the distribution (big word, I know) of bottled water. It’s a big step towards the end of this waste full product. Thank you, Thank you very much. :)

  11. My bad. It actually takes only 24L. of water to produce a hamburger (oops!). But that still is a lot.

  12. Unsafe water causes 80% of diseases and it kills lots of people. Young children especially can’t handle it because their bodies are not strong enough. Mostly children who are under the age of 5 die from the unhealthy water. My sister is almost 3 and I cannot imagine this happening to her. It is really sad that almost a billion people on the planet do not have clean water. We are very fortunate that we can just go to our tap and turn it on and there we are with clean fresh water. It is hard to believe that we use water to make almost anything.

  13. In the article it says that women in Africa carry water on their backs 40 billion hours every year. The water that they are carrying is very dirty which can also make people sick. Everyone needs water to survive but not everyone has clean water, for example the people who live in Africa and other developing countries. I do not think this is good!!!! Carrying the water can also give the people pain in their backs because they are carrying 40 pounds of water when the containers are full. One thing that we can do in Canada is donate money to build wells so they can have clean water to drink. I think that our school has already participated in this program and I hope that it will continue.
