I hope that most of you have chosen the book that you would like to read for the book to movie project I mentioned before Christmas. It can be a book you have already read or one that is new for you. There must be a movie to accompany the book. Perhaps you can borrow the movie from a friend or the library if you don’t have it.
Be prepared to make detailled comparisons between the book and the movie. You might want to take some notes as you read each chapter so you don’t have to reread the book too many times. (Think about the plot, setting and characters.) Worksheets will be handed out next week to assist you.
Feel free to share the book you have chosen with us here in the blog. What differences or similarities have you noticed so far?

Now that we have started reading the book, how have your original predictions changed? What do you think of the characters so far? Can you make any connections – text to text, text to self or text to world? Ask your parents about The Munsters, Gone With the Wind, the Cold War or some of the other events and people mentioned in the book. Check the internet to get some background knowledge about the 60’s.

Consider the following questions taken from the curriculum guide that accompanies the book Peak. You can post your answers here or use them as topics for your response journals.
1. Peak received no grades at his school, GSS. If you did not receive a grade for any of your work in your classes, what would change?
2. Zopa complimented Peak at the end of a climb and Peak says it was “a whole tank of O’s flowing into my bloodstream.” How do compliments make you feel and why are they so important? Who do you most like to be complimented by?
3. What did Peak learn from his visit to Everest?
4. Which character will you remember the most and why?
5. What types of changes did Peak go through physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially?
Lots to think about! Have fun.

At the very end of the book, Peak writes, “The only thing you’ll find on the summit of Mount Everest is a divine view. The things that really matter lie far below.” Now that we have finished the book, what do you think Peak is talking about? How have his experiences changed his personality from the beginning of the story? What opinions have you formed about some of the other characters like Zopa and Josh? Did you enjoy this book and why? Be honest but in a positive way.
Don’t forget to give proof from the story to back up your opinions.

After today’s reading, we have new information about Peak’s parents. Does what you learned today change your opinion of their character? Does this new information affect Peak’s attitude or feelings about his parents? Make sure to give examples from the story to support your answer.
